History

The Utilization of Unused Medications Act (KSA 65-1668 through 1675) was passed by the Kansas Legislature in 2008 to allow the donation of unused medications by adult care homes, mail service pharmacies, and medical care facilities to Federally Qualified Health Centers and indigent health care clinics. To read the full legislation visit the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy website at

To facilitate this, the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy issued regulations to ensure patient safety was maintained and in 2009, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Bureau of Local and Rural Health established a central repository for donations. In April of 2009, Prescription Solutions in Overland Park, Kansas made the first donation of unused medications to what is now known as The Kansas Repository.

Social and Rehabilitation Services joined the project on January 1, 2011 and awarded additional funding to cover the expense of opening the repository to the state’s mental health centers.
